About John Schoenfeld

John Schoenfeld brings an illustrator’s aesthetic to the art of nature photography. Founder of Pupil of the Eye, an internet-based nature photography source, John studied illustration and art for a number of years before turning his hand to the field of photography. After completing formal studies of the masters and techniques of photography, John moved to Colorado more than 30 years ago to pursue a career in nature photography.

To capture the beauty and composition of the natural world, John believes you must first be a student of the human eye--the focal point of all that we perceive and interpret. That process itself inspired his company’s name: Pupil of the Eye.

“The human eye is the most perfect lens known,” John says. “Trusting the eye is my mantra every time I pick up a camera.  It is the composition captured by the eye that inspires the images that you see on my web site-- images that represent the beauty, fragility and spirit of life found in the natural world. An environmental gift developed through the eons, creating an emotion, tangible to all senses, and a beauty that can be witnessed and revered through the pupil of the eye. ”

John’s awards include the Grand Prize from Today’s Photographer International magazine for his landscape of “Park Avenue” in Arches National Park, Utah. In addition to successful gallery sales, John received a White Ribbon award for “Crack of Dawn,” Glacier National Park Montana; and the Amaranth Award for Excellence for “Waiting to Dance” by the Louisville Art Association National/Regional Juried Photography Show in Louisville, Colorado.  John’s work also has been sold in the juried National Art Exhibition and Sale show sponsored by the Northern Colorado Artist Association in Fort Collins; at the Creative Eye Gallery in Denver; at the Mezzanine Gallery in the Aurora Municipal Center, as well as two one-man shows on the East Coast.
